Toonkunst Orchestra Leiden

About the Orchestra
The Toonkunstorkest Leiden (TOL) is an amateur symphony orchestra, consisting
of approximately 60 musicians. The orchestra, with more than a 140-year history,
gives three concerts per year.
In addition, TOL regularly performs as an accompanying orchestra with choruses
and other projects. Since 2012, we have formed the basis for the orchestra each
year for one of the Scratch Music Days in the Pieterskerk (Peter’s Church), Leiden.

Every other year we also go on tour abroad and perform in other countries. In
June 2024 we will perform in Leuven, Belgium. Previous destinations have
included Texel Island, Antwerpen and Gent in Belgium, Munster in Germany,
Oxford in England, Paris, and Istanbul.

Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening from 19:45 until 22:15 (7:45pm
until 10:15pm) at the Bonaventura College, Marienpoelstraat 6, Leiden. This
location is within walking distance of Leiden Central train station.

TOL has social media channels on Instagram and Facebook, where you can find
photos, updates, and fun stuff!

Openings and vacancies
At this moment the orchestra is accepting a few experienced first violinists. String
players usually play with the orchestra for a few weeks before the section
concertmaster and conductor together decide on full membership status. Winds
and brass players go through an audition process.

About the Conductor
Jeppe Moulijn (1972), began his studies in composition and musicology, but in the
end chose to major in conducting. He studied orchestral conducting with Ed
Spanjaard and Jac van Steen at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. He concluded
his studies as a guest conductor with the Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Thereafter he conducted diverse professional orchestras in the Netherlands,
Germany, and France. In 2003 Jeppe Moulijn was a finalist in the international
Prokofiev competition for young conductors in St. Petersburg, Russia. On this

occasion, he conducted a concert with the world-renowned St. Petersburg
Philharmonic Orchestra.
Among the many student and amateur orchestras is Jeppe Moulijn a much-seen
conductor. In addition to conducting the Toonkunstorkest Leiden, he also
conducts the Naarden Chamberorchestra, the Oost Nederlands Symphonie Orkest
(East Netherlands Symphony Orchestra), and the Leiden student orchestra
Collegium Musicum.

Composer
In recent years Jeppe Moulijn is more frequently active as a composer. After the
premiere of his violin concerto in 2007 in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, he
composes almost exclusively for commissions, for among others: the International
Chambermusic Festival on Schiermonnikoog and for the vocal ensemble Musa,
directed by Peter Dijkstra.
The premiere of his viola concerto took place in 2010, directed by Jeppe Moulijn
himself, with the soloist Francien Schatborn and the Toonkunstorkest as
accompanying orchestra. In 2012 he composed the compulsory work for the
international vocal competition in Den Bosch.
